The Day I Went to Shirley Beer and Ciders Festival ‘24

Picture this: walking the same path for about nine months, until you notice the subtle changes. Autumn colours cascade from the trees to the streets, embracing the ice beneath a delicate blanket of white snow. The predominantly grey sky weeps softly as the wind whispers through the air. Spring blossoms unfurl, bringing new life to the landscape.

One day, a new poster catches your eye on a lamp post, announcing a beer and cider festival at a nearby sports club. This event becomes another intriguing stop along your familiar route. Over the course of a week, you observe its transformation, culminating in the appearance of a mysterious tent. This unexpected addition sparks a sense of anticipation and curiosity, particularly for someone like me, who recently moved to the neighbourhood.

On Friday night, curiosity got the better of me; I explored its website and discovered past events such as comedy stand-ups and pub quizzes. Excited by what I found, I made plans to visit on Saturday, with classic rock cover bands headlining the main event.

I found myself pondering the same question posed by Electric Light Orchestra in their song 'Mr. Blue Sky': 'Please tell us why you had to hide away for so long.' As I arrived at the festival, the sun was shining, the sky was blue, and there was a delightful mix of relaxed and bustling atmosphere.

Attractions for all ages abounded at the festival. Live music performances featured bands like the Cantina Band, Sticky Mouse, Ellie Jones & The Giants, and Chaos. There were inflatable toys, face painting stations, and ample grassy areas for pets and kids to enjoy.

A wide variety of beverages catered to all palates, including cocktails, beers, and ciders. Food options were equally diverse, ranging from barbecue and chicken wings to pizza, Indian cuisine, and ice cream. While the selection was impressive, I couldn't help but notice that the beverages could have been colder, especially given the warm weather. Additionally, offering chips as a snack option could enhance the overall food experience.

The event was accessible to all, regardless of budget or disabilities. Located near the city centre, it was convenient for attendees to access necessary supplies for the day out, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for everyone.

What made the event truly remarkable was its charitable aspect, bringing fun to everyone while also supporting local businesses. As we look back on this day, it's clear that it will be remembered fondly for years to come. Hope to see you again in 2025!

Cheers
